Trick Your Textmate: Bookmarking Favorite Lines

Monday July 17, 2006 / 5 Comments

There’s plenty of great features under the hood for manipulating text, but Textmate really shines with the simplicity of its interface. One of my newly discovered favorites is the ability to bookmark “favorite” lines.

By either clicking in the far left gutter or pressing Command+F2 (Apple+F2) while on the desired line of code, you can bookmark that line. This makes it simple to bookmark valuable points in your code and quickly navigate through them by pressing F2.

Naturally, the bookmark stays with the line of code when you insert new lines, so you’ll always have easy and immediate access to those reference points. It’s a very simple solution to help you more efficiently navigate those large and complex text files, and I love it.

Omnigraffle and Visio versions of the wireframe templates and stencils I use on all of my projects. There’s even a few examples included for good measure. More about Wireframe & Page Description Diagram Stencils and Templates

If you’re a TextMate user, you should check out Snipplr . It has an awesome bundle for TextMate that let’s you easily retrieve and submit code snippets.

I just recently started using TextMate and I’m still learning some of the finer points … so far, I really, really enjoy using it. Thanks for the tip, I’ll have to try that out.

btw – are you a fan of white(light) background or black(dark) background in TextMate (or other editor). I seem to be the only one in the office that prefers the white(light) background. Just curious.

@chuck: I know what you mean, all those screenshots and screencasts with the dark background, I wonder how people can stand it. I hate the dark background myself, and was tremendously grateful when TextMate started having themes distributed with it, and included a nice clean white background-based theme in Mac Classic. Most of the themes are dark, but thankfully Mac Classic is more than good enough

(For those who wonder where the themes are in TextMate, go to Preferences > Fonts & Colors, and choose a theme from the pop-up menu there.)

Garrett,

Thanks for the tip, I wasn’t aware of this very cool feature. Are you aware of a way to code a bookmarked line into a snippet?

10 mins on Garret’s webpage and I’m on my 2nd download lol.
