The Home Office

Friday July 22, 2005 / 29 Comments

After a lot of waiting, and a little effort, the home office is finally complete. There’s not much to it, but I like it. Since everybody always seems to be interested in pictures of office setups, here’s my obligatory “photological” documentation.

A view of the desk and chair.

The laptop and monitor.

Another view of the desk and chair.

I’m no photographer, so go easy on the photo quality. Thanks to everyone for the furniture advice. I went with the IKEA Galant Series. My new apartment had more space, so I got a slightly larger desk than I originally planned. For anybody who is wondering, the Jerker is a very sturdy and reliable desk as well. If I was tight on space, I would have gotten it in a heartbeat.

I see you’ve been reading what I’ve been reading. Jeremy Boles

There’s something infinitely fascinating about office/desk setups.

How is that mouse?
I just bought an iMac and my old wireless Microsoft mouse’s tracking is horrible but I don’t like only having one button on my Apple Bluetooth mouse, which has wonderful tracking… Payton

Payton – At first I didn’t really like the mouse. However, I’ve gotten used to it and adjusted the button actions, and I love it. Garrett

I’m jealous of that chair, it looks so comfy :)

Very sparse set-up. I thought you were a programmer, not a designer (hehe)? Justin P

You better get one of those clear plastic chair mats, otherwise your nice white carpet will be ruined with tracks (and grease from the wheel bearings), trust me. Justin P

Now I see why you had that post about cable-management solutions earlier.

I’m green over your chair too, it looks really adjustable and comfy. Matt Turner

I have the same chair and think it’s a worthwhile investment. At this point, as a freelancer, I spend more hours per day in my chair than in my bed. So I think it’s worth spending the money on a great chair. Dale Cruse

Justin – I’m a little of both. I’m definitely all about simplicity though. The site isn’t simple just because it’s pretty. I just don’t like extra stuff.

Dale – I remember when I was freelancing. However, I don’t remember spending any time in bed. I just took occassional naps at the desk. Garrett

looks like a tight (nice) little spot to do work, love the B&W shots on the wall too. What you ought to do is give the office run-down… what’s the tech setup, what’s the hook ups, etc… steve

For all who are interested, here’s the details.

In the photo…
* 12 Powerbook on an iCurve
* 19 Dell Monitor
* iSight
* Apple Bluetooth Wireless Keyboard
* Logitech MX1000 Mouse
* Sony Ericsson T610 (using Salling Clicker)
* IKEA Galant Desk
* Aeron

Off the photo…
* Airport Extreme Base Station
* Airport Express & Bose 3.2.1 System for music Garrett

I just blogged on this! he he mrod

mmm Bose sound system. Must have sound to accompany work. Agreeing with the time in chair/bed, I do love these big comfy leather chairs I’ve got at work. Gotta get me one of these for home. Also, addicted to dual monitors at work, gotta get another for home too :) JohnO

nice setup, i bought an icurve a while back, and then ended up returning it (never got a seperate keyboard/mouse to make it worth it).

I like photos/frames on the wall. brian breslin

Since I’m moving into a new appartment this fall, I’ll need some new furniture.
The current livingroom furniture doesn’t match the minimalistic style of the new appartment, and since I really liked the Galant series from IKEA, that’ll probably be my next table. :) Henrik Lied

I also have a Galant series desk, and a 12” G4, and a wireless mouse (Apple), but your setup looks WAY prettier than mine. My back is crying out for a chair like that. Ryan Heneise

I see you’ve also been reading my new favorite book – Agile Web Development With Rails Ryan Heneise

Off-Topic:

Garrett, you’ve been ripped. Michael’s Remarks copied you nearly 1:1.
I’ve written a related post in my blog. Valentin Woelm

Valentin – Thanks for pointing that site out. I appreciate it. I had come across it a while ago and just let it slide. I’ve actually found a couple of others, and it’s always obvious that it’s a cheap knockoff. As such, I figure it’s not worth the time to tell them to change. Thanks again. Garrett

Okay, no problem. Keep on your good work. Valentin Woelm

Garrett. Nice setup, man. Looks comfy.. and glad to see you’ve been reading up on the Rails. Anybody finish that book yet? I am up to the section on Action Pack > Views thus far…

So what are you printing with in there? Ben Hirsch

Just one thing: Isn’t the height of the display a bit of a strain on your neck? Looks like a pretty uncomfortable angle, unless you’re really tall ;-) Martin

Martin – Is 6’5” tall? Part of my motivation behind setting up my new office was to get height adjustable everything and make the office much more ergonomic. But for most people, you’re right that the monitor height would probably be a bit tall. Garrett

Garrett,

I’m 6’4” and get politely teased for my similarly positioned monitor and chair height on a regular basis. People sit down and their feet dangle, heads look up and necks strain. It’s kind of funny – I often feel like the Friendly Giant :) Geof Harries

hrmm.. we’re in the land of giants.. i’m 6’3” JohnO

I am 5’7’’ :-(
Nice office, my boss has that chair, someday I swear I’ll steal it from her. Bruno

Garrett,

As an aside to this commentary on your office space, why is Bright Corner looking to hire another IA when you are the current IA? Do you work at home for BC – I’m interested in hearing how that company is structured. Geof Harries

I love that setup. So clean, very nice. I wish those chairs were more affordable. Adam Girardi

Garrett — How’s the display? I’ve got the Dell 2005FPW (widescreen) and it’s fantastic, love the the aspect ratio even though it’s only a tad wider than the 2001FP and not as high. Any ghosting or other issues? Joseph Wain

im redoing my room.. you room looks good so far.. if its not a bother could u send me detailed pictures of your room?

thanks
