Server Move and Redesign
Thursday February 1, 2007 / 7 CommentsThe site will be moving to Media Temple this weekend and getting a makeover that I’ve been planning for quite some time. So, there may be some weirdness with the feed and DNS switch. Now might be a good time to make sure you’re hitting the Feedburner feed since that URL won’t change, or this could be a convenient time to unsubscribe.
The redesign will get its own writeup, but I will say that I have high expectations on myself to dramatically increase both the quality of my writing and content in general. I’ve been writing here for almost two years now, and have always been disappointed with the format and my writing. I wanted posts that were richer and more engaging. It was time for a format that was designed around visuals and examples first. And of course, if I’m spending all my time developing in Rails, it was only appropriate that my personal site be powered by a Rails-based CMS as well. That’s enough for now. See you on the other side.

Hi Garrett, I came across this blog entry regarding MediaTemple of late. You probably know about their issues but in case you haven’t heard I figured I’d share this.

exp:monkeyFor reference, I’ve been keeping an eye on the media temple stuff (and have an account there for work purposes) and we havevn’t had any trouble recently.
Josh BlountWhat is the feedburner feed URI for your site?
Walker HamiltonI’ve had an account there since they opened. There were lots of initial issues and I encountered a few issues myself, but most of it seems to be ironed out. I’ve been doing almost daily releases for the last couple of weeks, and haven’t noticed any issues. Their response to support requests has been good, and I’ve been satisfied with the reliability.
Going into it, I didn’t have very high expectations of the Grid Server given it was a new service, and that’s part of the reason I didn’t move my sites over there at first. I’m comfortable enough with where things are at to go ahead and make the move. Hopefully, it won’t be a mistake. :)
Walker – Oops, just updated the post, but I’ll post it here too it’s http://feeds.feedburner.com/garrettdimoncom.
GarrettPersonally I’ve had more success hosting my fiancé‘s mephisto blog on the grid server than mine on on my TextDrive account. I’ve not seen or experienced the problems that others have had with the grid server.
Caleb Jaffaee gads, not mediatemple!? i just jumped ship from there, for months my sites have been plagued with downtime, slowness, unfixable ftp-disconnects every few minutes, super-slow mysql connections… and i was a huge MT fanboy for the last 5 years or so too, but gridserver just ruined what i thought of them due to constant problems.
paulGood luck on a speedy transition to Media Temple. I’m currently debating when the best time is to move the rest of my sites over to the DV servers. Definitely looking forward to seeing what happens with your redesign.
