Refresh Your City
Tuesday February 7, 2006 / 50 CommentsI pulled together a group of organizers into a Refresh discussion group. If you’re interested in getting things started in your city, or just want to share your experience with others who are looking to get started, take a second and signup.
I’m shocked every time I turn around that our little Refresh has been organically expanding to other cities. Refresh now has independent groups in Boston, Dallas, DC, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, and Seattle.
Since I’m receiving the question more and more often, I just wanted to say that we encourage anyone who’s interested to just take the ball and run with it in their city. So, if you’re looking for a place to get involved, start a group in your city or get in touch with the right people in your locale and find out how you can help.
Refresh the world, anybody?

I’m a little suprised to see there isn’t one in Austin already, we’re so close :)
Somebody ought to start one here, thanks for the heads up to Refresh.
Justin PerkinsWe are a little late getting our site up, but we have a group started in Houston…and yeah seems crazy there isn’t one in Austin, but I know several people in Austin who are interested after hearing what we are doing and seeing the Refesh Dallas site.
Kelsey RugerWe’re also starting a Refresh group in Oklahoma City. Nothing online yet, but a site and first meeting are in the works.
JeffGarrett: what about making a refresh headquarters? That more than anything else would spur other cities to adopt the idea. For instance, I only just found out there’s a Refresh DC which is really exciting! But I would have known without this post. It’s definitely something that could become a catalyst for a great community of professionals city by city.
Edward J. S. AtkinsonThat’s definitely a great idea. I love the way you’re influencing so many groups and they’re adapting it.
I’ve already thought about refreshprague.org :) However I think we have pretty much enough similar socialising events in this field for such a small country.
Jan BrašnaIn my hope that getting a refresh group in Austin will be simple, I went ahead and bought the domain name ( refreshaustin.org ). Austinites, let’s do this.
Thanks so much for the idea Garrett :)
Justin PerkinsSan Diego anyone?
Tony PetersonTony – I’m involved with LA’s group and I’ve been wanting to start one for SD, since I live here and all. Anyways, I just bought the domain (refreshsandiego.org) and I’ll set the site up this week.
The LA meet was a lot of fun, if you’re up for the drive you should try to make it to the next one.
Cameron OlthuisGarrett, thanks for the nod! We greatly appreciate it!
Looks like the “Refreshing Cities” list will have to be less a list and more a select box with all of these new cities!
Jason GarberA mothership would be really great.
Bryce JohnsonI’m pretty active in the Toronto Barcamp group and the User Experience Network so it would be cool to get everyone together.
I just registered refreshtoronto.org
Tony, Cameron,
Count me in for San Diego!
Edward O'ConnorRefresh the world you say??
It’s not called Refresh but its the same concept – Multipack in the West Midlands of the UK. We launched the site yesterday and already have an active group of developers involved.
It’s definitely the future though – emphasising the “Social” in the new “Social Web”.
SiRock on. This is something I’d love to get going for the Boise, Idaho area. I’m gonna pick your brain a bit at SXSW as to how this whole Refresh shin-dig works.
Nathan SmithHere’s another idea to expand on what Nathan said. How many people who are starting or have started a Refresh group in their city will be going to SXSW in March? How about a meet-up for Refresh to discuss ideas or maybe share resources (e.g. Cities that are close together might be able to share speakers?).
Kelsey RugerRefresh, refresh everywhere!
I’m helping Mark & Mark with Refresh Boston in my neighborhood. I was hoping to get the group started here in Beantown and Mark beat me to it. It’s good to see so many people just taking the initiative and starting Refresh groups in their cities.
I’ll be at SXSW this year (my first time) and would be glad to get together with you other Refreshers to talk about where things are going. Just let me know via email (if you’re wicked smart, you can email pat at my domain dot com).
Patrick HaneyI set up something a little similar over here in Newcastle, UK, newcastlenewmedia.org and we’ve started getting up to mischief.
One of my predictions for 2006 was lots of small, localised groups cropping up around the web scene – and it looks like it’s well underway.
gareth rushgroveBy my count, there are six new Refresh sites that have gone up this week alone (each are in various stages of readiness):
Austin, Dayton, Houston, Oklahoma City, San Diego, and Seattle
Anyone else think a “Refresh” wikipedia entry is in order to keep track of all these sites?
Jason GarberWould anyone be interested in setting up a central RSS feed or something to pull into our “Other Refreshing Cities” lists?
MarkDone!

Feedback? (I know I still need to add a few…)
Jason GarberJason,
How did you hear about Dayton already. I just registered it about 2 days ago and was going to roll it this weekend.
MikeAnd now Dayton is being refreshed too :)
Refresh Dayton
MikeI noticed it in my referrer logs. Hope I didn’t jump the gun in announcing Dayton!
Jason GarberSomeone please ‘Refresh’ NY or NJ…
MarcJason,
Ah… no worries! I just couldn’t figure how anyone could have known since I just registered it Wednesday. It’s live now.
Hey, what’s the best way of letting the others(refresh sites) know or is it just email to each of them thing?
Thanks,
MikeMike
See the Feedburner link above. I’ll be updating it tonight with the newer cities. (I also think Garrett’s hinting that we move this thread to the new Google Group he set up. I haven’t had time to look in to that yet, though.)
Jason GarberGarrett or Jason,
Can you post the Google Group so we can find it?
Thanks!
MikeCome on over: http://groups.google.com/group/RefreshTalk
Jason GarberI registered Refresh Miami, but haven’t had a chance to put anything up yet.
http://refreshmiami.org/
if anyone is in miami, let me know. the community is pretty small here.
BrianI just registered two:
http://refreshabe.org for the Allentown/Bethlehem/Easton PA area
http://refreshdelval.org for the Delaware Valley- Western NJ/Eastern PA
It’s gonna be a bit before I get something up on either site, but feel free to get in touch through my website if you’re in my area and want to contribute/help/whatever. I’d also be interested in hearing from anyone from Eastern NJ or NYC or Philly re coordination if someone else gets something going there. Maybe a once a year meetup for a larger region or something . . . just a thought.
BJ NovackI’ve been thinking about doing a refreshWNY for Western New York. Are there enough people willing to come to somewhere around Buffalo?
ThameThame: If you could somehow incorporate NNY…My friend Jason @ RiversideMediaGroup.com would be interested.
MarkMark:
I suppose anyone willing to come to the Buffalo region would be free to do so. I just wanted to make sure there were enough people in the area to host one.
ThameI’ve posted this in the Boston Fresh page, but I might as well put it here too since this looks pretty central:
Refresh New York City / New Jersey!
VincentSurely a Google Maps mashup is in order now of all the Refresh’s in the US? Anyone fancy the task? It would certainly make it easier for noobs to find their local Refresh.
(I’ll leave it to one of you US habitants – I wouldn’t really get much out of it being a UK boyee)
SiFYI, I registered refreshtwincities.org and will have some stuff up and going in the very near future. Anyone in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area interested should give me a holler.
Drew GeraetsGood work! Sounds like the group we have in Australia, called Port 80.
Miles BurkeGreat idea Si, here you go…
Justin Perkinshttp://cities.refreshaustin.org Cities on a Google Map
Man, I really screwed that up. My textile brain is kooky. Once more, Refreshing Cities on a Google Map
(Garrett, maybe you could fix that if you get some extra time)
Justin PerkinsIf anyone is interested in helping getting a refresh started in
Des Moines IOWA please contact me at getanewbrowser@gmail.com. I’d love to get one going. Or visit getanewbrowser.com
Thanks :)
TJCairo is still with the old map, any refreshment ideas?
