Holy Upgrade, Textpattern!
Wednesday November 2, 2005 / 11 CommentsThere’s a new version of Textpattern, and boy does it make me happy. In my opinion, it’s a bigger upgrade than the .01 change in version number might make you think.
- Sweet new custom and dynamic 404 error pages.
- Improved comment form markup. i.e. It uses label tags now. (That’s my patch!)
- Better control over the comments_invite tag.
- Fancier comment previewing.
- And a whole lot more.
This made my day. Way to go Textpattern. If you’re not on board yet, I highly suggest the upgrade, or the move to Textpattern entirely.

Yup I just upgraded last night. Pretty nice update.
YannickYeah the version number is a little deceiving seems as they are making such massive progress!
David LongworthHmmm, I still don’t get it. What’s the all the hooopla about Textpattern? How’s it better than say, WordPress? Is WordPress even something to compare it too? Would love for someone to convince me to use it :)
Josh PigfordI’m thinking that Wordpress is waaay better than Textpattern.
FintanI’m interested in hearing what makes Textpattern better than other engines in your opinion as well! I’m not biased, I don’t know Textpattern at all.
I use WordPress and Pivot myself. Both are nice and both have strengths and weaknesses compared to eachother. I can’t really tell which one is better, it just depends.
So Garrett, what sets Textpattern apart from the rest of the engines?
MarcoTextpattern to me is just clean, simple, and well thought out. Wordpress on the other hand has always felt more powerful, but also not as intuitive. If you want detailed control and the associated complexity, Wordpress is better. If you’re ok giving up a little control for simplicity then Textpattern is better.
They both have their strengths and weaknesses, but with each release, Textpattern is closing the gap and become equally as powerful as Wordpress.
GarrettEven though I’ve been a Blogger user for a while, the new version of Textpattern looks enticing (especially the 404 pages). I think I’m going to give it a whirl this weekend.
Kunal AnandHi Garrett,
One of the things that was making me tear my few remaining hairs out was the way Textpattern generates comment entries, with double line-breaks between paragraphs rather than proper markup. It looks like you’ve got that licked.
Was that a plugin or something that 4.0.2 can do for you?
Nick CaldwellWhoops; should have read the new version thread on forum.textpattern.com more carefully. I can see an update happening very soon.
Nick CaldwellCan Textpattern be compaired to Wordpress? With the little bit I’ve experimented with both, It seems Wordpress is very blog focused, whereas Textpattern is more CMS in it’s role.
GordoWhich has more AJAX support (in terms of plugins, AJAX-enabled themes, search, etc.)
