Another SXSW in the History Books

Friday March 17, 2006 / 7 Comments

As quickly as it arrived, it was gone. Last year was great, but this year was amazing. Instead of a long drawn out post, I decided I’d list out my favorite highlights and things I learned from the week.

  1. The Holistic Web Panel. It was a pleasure to work with such talented people. It went great, and thanks to everyone for the kind words. Notes, slides, and HTML are online at Carl’s site.
  2. Getting to hang out with Dan, Keith, Wade, Mike D., Scrivs, Rundle, Matt, Patrick, Eris, Ryan, Jason, Shaun, and Carl. Unfortunately, there was a plethora of other folks I didn’t get a chance to hang out with as much as I would have liked, but there’s always next year.
  3. Getting a citation for pedestrian in the roadway right after Matt was somewhat assaulted.
  4. Seeing the look on people’s faces when they found out Dan Rubin was real. Until that point, I think most everybody had him lumped in with fairies and unicorns. They had heard of them, but never seen them.
  5. 9rules and Bryan Veloso winning some awards.
  6. As a friendly warning, I strongly advise not playing foosball against Patrick Haney unless you’re either really good, or don’t mind getting a solid beat down.
  7. There’s not enough time to hang out with everyone you’d like to, and some of the best professionally oriented conversations happen outside of the panels.
  8. For whatever reason, the Brit’s say and do the most entertaining things. They are some fun people to hang out with.
  9. Free drinks at bars tends to make the place unhospitable and very much like a sauna. It’s best to pay a few bucks for them, thus skipping the line and heat. Similarly, if a bartender laughs when you order a “moonshine jug” and doesn’t tell you what’s in it, it’s probably not a good idea to drink two of them.
  10. And the very last thing I learned, that relates a bit to last year is that Scrivs, bless his heart, just cannot hang.

It was great to meet everyone, and this was a great year. For those of you who didn’t make it, let this serve as some encouragement for next year. On another note, I should be posting a little more regularly again. I just had to take a couple months off and relax a bit. The TextMate series will resume this weekend.

Omnigraffle and Visio versions of the wireframe templates and stencils I use on all of my projects. There’s even a few examples included for good measure. More about Wireframe & Page Description Diagram Stencils and Templates

Thanks Garrett, now how am I going to hustle people out of money and free drinks if you keep telling them that I’m a “foosball hustler?”

At any rate, it was great to finally meet you, even if you did fall asleep in your own room while the rest of us were up until 6AM.

Patrick Haney

Was good to have met you dude.

I had a fantastic time at SXSW :)

Zach Inglis

It was awesome, simply said. I wish I was able to hang out with you more, but I’m just glad that we got to meet up. I’m already looking forward to the next time all of us get to have this much fun.

Bryan Veloso

It was good to meet you. Hopefully next year we’ll actually have time to hang out. I felt like this year, it was just way too hectic to really sit down and have an in-depth conversation with more than a few people.

Nathan Smith

Well, I for one, am extremely disappointed. I was hoping we’d get a chance to chat but alas, there was just not enough time. This unfortunately happened with a lot of people. Now I have to wait a whole year before getting the opportunity to do so again.

Jonathan Snook

Nice to finally meet you, Garrett, and the Holistic panel was one of the best this year. I wish I’d had more time to talk to people too…

Michael Moncur

Dude! Where’s the pizza picture! :)

Mmmm…. hot pizza…
