Action
Tuesday May 16, 2006 / 10 Comments“We should be taught not to wait for inspiration to start a thing. Action always generates inspiration. Inspiration seldom generates action.” – Frank Tibolt
“Far better it is to dare mighty things to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered with failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the gray twilight that know not victory or defeat.” – Theodore Roosevelt

Love the Roosevelt quote. Good find.
John NunemakerThis is certainly true when it comes to design. Sometimes you have to get something down on paper/Photoshop if only so that you know what you DON’T like.
Christian WatsonVery true. Like when I’m writing a blog entry: It always turns out entirely different than what I thought it would be.
OlavWaiting for “inspiration” can be crippling to a project. Enthusiasm for the idea or concept is far more valuable.
Chris BlackThe TR quote is a snippet from my favorite speech of all time. I’m glad you like it too. I’ve never heard of Frank Tibolt before, but I’ll be looking him up shortly.
Patrick LeeIn his short decree Craft is the Enemy, comic artist James Kochalka argues we are all capable of producing great works of art/design/media RIGHT NOW. Don’t wait around for your skills or technical craft to meet some arbitrary, self-imposed, illusory level; craft is subjective anyways.
I’ve always been caught in the same trap: Once I learn CSS I’ll build my own website; Once I know enough about typography I’ll apply to a design firm; Once I…etc. Nope. If you have an idea, act on it now.
Jeff WernerThe Roosevelt quote is very cool.
Eoghan McCabeShame some folks are too eager to be comfortable with what others provide. We all have the ability. Some of us just have to work harder to get it out.
Brandon EllisDamn straight. I’d love to paint that first quote on the wall of my studio for the odd day when crisis of motivation strikes, ‘cause strapping yourself to the chair and getting down and dirty with the pixels is the only way the magic will happen. You just got to believe.
